Portrait of Selina Chönz:
Selina Chönz was the eldest child of the Meyer-Ronzi family. Her father, the German Anton M. Meyer, was a printer and typesetter. Selina attended the Ecole superieure de jeunes filles in Lausanne and then a kindergarten teacher seminar. In 1932, because she could not find a job at a kindergarten, she took a job as a governess for the family of Lord Robert and Lady Dorothy Moulton-Mayer (founder of classical children`s concerts in the poor districts of London). When Maria Montessori held the 17th international training course[3] at the University of London, the family gave her the opportunity to attend one day twice a week for six weeks. In the mornings, you could sit in on a Montessori school, and in the afternoons, you could attend Maria Montessori`s lectures, which were simultaneously translated from Italian into English. After that, she found her first job in Zuoz in the Engadine. One day, friends told her that a position at the only Montessori kindergarten in the city of Zurich was becoming available. From the whole nature of the facility, she recognized the progress and application of Montessori principles. It was there that she came up with the idea of writing a children`s book herself. In 1939, she married the architect Iachen Ulrich Könz (1899-1980), who had four boys from his first marriage. They later had a son, the painter and illustrator Steivan Liun Könz (1940-1998).

Alois Carigiet (1902-1985) was the older brother of the later actor Zarli Carigiet. He came to Chur with his parents in 1911, completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and then went to Zurich, where he worked in an advertising studio. In 1927 he was able to open his own studio, where he designed stage sets and costumes for a cabaret. In 1939 he switched from graphic designer to freelance artist when he moved to Obersaxen. There he also worked on illustrating children`s books. The most famous was Schellenursli (text by Selina Chönz), which made the Engadine custom of Chalandamarz world-famous. The following children`s books, such as Flurina and the Wildvöglein, did not quite achieve the same level of fame, but are no less valuable from an artistic point of view. Exhibitions followed in Schaffhausen, Solothurn and Geneva. In 1950 he moved back to Zurich. In 1956 he painted the facade of the `Schwarzer Adler` in Stein am Rhein on behalf of the Falken brewery (Schaffhausen). In 1960 he returned to his home in Graubünden and continued to illustrate books. He also wrote children`s books himself. Awards and honors: 1966 Hans Christian Andersen Award as an illustrator, 1966 Swiss Youth Book Prize for Zottel, Zick and Zwerg
